Selling on OpenHoods
How do I list my car on OpenHoods?
Create an account, click "List Your Car", fill in your vehicle details including your demerit points, upload photos, and pay the $33 listing fee. Your listing will be live within minutes.
What does it cost to list my car?
A single listing costs $33 AUD. This includes 60 days on the platform, up to 20 photos, and 7 days of featured placement. There are no hidden fees or commissions on the sale.
Why do I need to disclose my demerit points?
OpenHoods is built on the belief that responsible drivers are responsible car owners. Your demerit point history gives buyers confidence that the vehicle has been driven responsibly. It's what sets OpenHoods apart from other car marketplaces.
What if I have demerit points?
You can still list your car. Having some demerit points doesn't disqualify you — honesty and transparency are what matter. Buyers appreciate upfront disclosure regardless of the number.
How do I check my demerit points?
You can check your demerit points through your state or territory's transport authority:
- VIC: VicRoads (roads.vic.gov.au)
- NSW: Service NSW (service.nsw.gov.au)
- QLD: Queensland Transport (service.transport.qld.gov.au)
- SA: Service SA (mysagovau)
- WA: Department of Transport (transport.wa.gov.au)
- TAS: Service Tasmania (service.tas.gov.au)
- NT: NT Government (nt.gov.au/driving)
- ACT: Access Canberra (accesscanberra.act.gov.au)
How long will my listing stay on the website?
Your listing will remain active for 60 days from the date of purchase. You'll receive an email reminder before your listing expires. If your car hasn't sold, you can purchase a new listing to relist it.
I've sold my car. How do I remove my listing?
Log in to your account and remove your listing from your dashboard. There's no refund for early removal, but we're glad your car found a new home!
Can I edit my listing after it's published?
Yes. Log in to your account and you can update your listing details, photos, and price at any time during the 60-day listing period.
Buying on OpenHoods
Is it free to browse and contact sellers?
Yes. Browsing listings and contacting sellers is completely free. Only sellers pay to list their vehicles.
Are the demerit points verified by OpenHoods?
No. Demerit points are self-reported by the seller. While our Terms and Conditions require honest disclosure, we recommend using demerit point information as one factor in your decision-making alongside a mechanical inspection and vehicle history check.
How do I contact a seller?
Click on a listing to view the seller's contact details. You can reach out directly by phone or email to arrange an inspection.
Does OpenHoods handle the payment or transfer of the vehicle?
No. OpenHoods is an advertising platform only. The transaction, payment, and transfer of ownership are between you and the seller. We recommend meeting in person, arranging an independent inspection, and using secure payment methods like bank transfer.
Account and Payments
What payment methods do you accept for listing fees?
We accept credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) processed securely through Stripe. We also support Apple Pay and Google Pay.
Can I get a refund on my listing fee?
Listing fees are non-refundable. This includes cases where your car sells before the listing expires, your listing is removed for breaching our Terms and Conditions, or you choose to remove your listing early.
